Cruise on Lake Burley Griffin - Sunday 6th July 2008

The Lake Burley Griffin cruise on the MV Southern Cross on Sunday 6 July proved a roaring success. There was plenty of food, wine and above all else good company. French and Flemish were the languages of the day, although German and occasionally English was spoken.

The cruise was generously subsidised by the Club from the profits of the Multicultural Festival.

In spite of the chilly weather most of us ventured to the front of the vessel as it plied its way around the Lake boundaries. From the Boathouse restaurant, near the Russell Defence complex to the nude statue adjacent to the Governor General’s wharf there was plenty to see and keep us entertained.

The 27 members and friends took who took advantage of the club’s three hour cruise thoroughly enjoyed the excursion. And the gentle motion was very soporific and inclined to put some of us to sleep – no one had to rush and find a bucket or lean over the side!

Quotes from the MV Southern Cross sailors:

A great opportunity to meet new people on my first weeks in Canberra and a great way to appreciate beautiful scenery – Alexandra Futeral

It was a wonderful experience to see Canberra from a different perspective. Enjoyed the company. Struggled with the French. But otherwise, relaxed and had a great time. – Boaz Fischer

A great opportunity to meet new people and get some time to talk with ‘old’ people. I thought it would be cold, but in fact we even managed to spend sometime on the outside deck admiring ‘another’ Canberra. The hours were gone before I even realised. - Joelle Vandermensbrugghe
